And we're back!

After weathering two hurricane successfully without any power outages, KSCL is ready for Fall Broadcasting to begin! On the 10th, we had a DJ interest meeting and the turn out was fantastic. There were a lot of new faces who were terribly excited about possibly having a radio show. By the end of the meeting, Tyler had a stack of DJ applications.

On the 16th, we had our first training meeting. Unfortunately the turn out wasn't so great. However, that didn't stop us from training and re-training the small group. Though more importantly, we sat every one of them down to sign them up for Spinitron!

Zakk and Cazes hosted the premier show of the this Broadcast season. The Top 30 show is back, with a brand new time slot! If you loved the Top 30 show over the summer, be sure to check it out Fridays from 3pm until 6pm.

In Centenary news, last week the college welcomed the new Dean of Student Life, David L. Wolmack. I have yet to meet him, but I've head great things from students that have had interaction with him.

Now that we're back into the swing of things, expect more consistent updates to the blog. The station will begin broadcasting a new program soon, so expect an update about when you can check it out (and yes, you'll find out what the show's about and what it's called then too. I've gotta keep things suspenseful somehow!).

For now keep an eye out on our broadcasting schedule for the start of some great new and returning shows!

Don't You Dare Miss Rhythmic Gymnastics

No, don't worry faithful readers, the KSCL blog isn't dead! It's just these past few weeks have been blisteringly uneventful. Summer broadcasting has plodded along and will come to an end this Saturday. The target date for starting Fall Broadcasting is currently set as September 15th. Sorry to all those listeners who found some favorite new shows over these past few months. With any luck, most of your favorite DJs will be returning soon enough.

Centenary begin a new term on August 25th and all the new first years have started to flood the campus. I'm excited at the wealth of new DJs our little station could possibly have. The name of the game is recruiment and it goes into action this Sunday at the Organization fair.

Like I said before, not much has happened as of late (aside from that whole "Jon leaving" bit). Fear not, however, more posts will come as more stuff occurs. For now, go enjoy the last week of summer and the last week of the Olympics.

PS - Curbside recyling started on Monday. A cry of "Finally" was issued from those of us who filled up the can in the first week.

Former KSCL DJ, Rob Schneider does Stephen Colbert

Apples in Stereo frontman Robert Schneider appeared on The Colbert Report on Monday, August 4th. I got a chance to see the apples in Little Rock last week and was able to capture a KSCL Station ID. Hopefully it'll go live soon. But did you know that Schneider was a KSCL disc jockey in the late 80's?

We Didn't Start the Fire!

If you're trying to figure out why KSCL is off-air right now, well, it's because there was a bit of a mishap on campus. If you tuned in to the Top 30 show around 3:30ish you might have heard Zakk, Cazes and I proclaim that the lights were flickering on and off. This started right as I walked into the lobby, which means that at first, it must have been my fault. We managed to start an Alkaline Trio song before the power went out for good. Zakk called Jon. I called DPS. We went to explore the damage.

All the power was out on the third floor of the SUB, only half on the second, and the basement level (with the post office and student life) had full power. We headed back upstairs, but it was clear that we couldn't do anything. So we headed down to the second floor where Cazes and his friend Danny played some ping pong and then chair jousted. I made a sign which I later hung in the lobby. Check it out if you're ever up there.

Then Zakk, Cazes, Danny and I all proceeded to call Cha Cha, a service which will answer any question to the best of their abilities. Yes, real people answer you too! We had a variety of silly stupid questions along with a few important ones. Like "How many licks to the center of a toostie pop?" The answer: 364. I kid you not. Ask Cha Cha.

We discovered the source of the power outage was a fire in an electrical manhole right outside Rotary. Electrical Manhole. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Best band name ever. Cazes called dibs on it though. Someone told us the power would be back on soon... we waited and waited. In Centenary Speak, "soon" means "eventually" and "eventually" means "not today, or maybe today if we get around to it." However, since it's after 5, they probably said, "Time to go home, we'll fix it tomorrow."

I guess it's a waiting game. Though I have no idea how we'll find out when the power comes back on unless we're there.

Centenary Looking for New Dean of Student Life

Centenary President Kenneth Schwab sent out an email today informing campus of Lori Bradshaw's departure from the position of Dean of Student Life. According to Dr. Schwab, Ms. Bradshaw will stay on campus and assist with the transition though mid-June. The search committee appointed to help locate the new Dean will be chaired by Dr. Scott Chirhart, Assistant Professor of Biology.

This search committee will consist of Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Joshua Lawrence, Associate Professor of Business Dr. Kelly Weeks, Cross Country Coach Dr. Shelley Armstrong, Head Women's Soccer Coach Chase Wooten, Director of Human Resources Tracy Maranto-Phillips, Director of Public Safety Zeke Aull, President of Alumni Association Hoyt Bain, and students Anna Maris and Emma Cook.

Centenary Webmail Hacked, Students lose all information, IT says, "We told you so"

Okay, maybe not all-at least not yet. If you have a Centenary Webmail account beware.


Nice, that even on the last day of school I'm super fueled up to write an article about shotty work in the Centenary arena.

So, if you have a Centenary Webmail Account: BEWARE!

There's a phishing scam hitting campus. Users receive an email that appears perfectly legitment, even from "info@centenary.edu". The subject line is "Webmail Upgrade." The email directs the user to a site that appears to be Centenary's webmail login screen. After punching in your information you're thanked. Wait? What just happened?
You just gave up your username and password to someone in Montana.

Centenary's response has been slow. An hour and a half after these emails appeared Centenary's IT department released a statement, "We have been notified of an email that has been received by some of you that appears that it has come from the Centenary IT Department, it is not...The IT Department does not ask for any of these types of data in an email."

Okay, I consider myself somewhat web-savvy and I did overlook the url (hahnyao.ax3). However, it appears that the email was sent form "info@centenary.edu" which leads me to wonder if that account has been hacked. Further, how would this phishing organization get students emails? I mean, mine's prominently displayed on KSCL, but what about others? It takes a password and username to get in there.

There could be more problems than just these. Hopefully the Conglomerate is researching.

I just wish someone would tell us what to do now. I've rearranged the passwords. Should I take any further steps?

[UPDATE (10:41am, 5/9): The Centenary IT Department has released another email within the last hour. For the future, they recommend changing your password and [if in doubt] never clicking a link inside an email. IT then goes on to add a link in their email.

My take: It's the best argument for preventing this in the future. IT can't prevent this from happening at small places like Centenary. Users should double check any links in emails. It's a wakeup call to remember to check the URL at the top. However, I'm under the impression that "info@centenary.edu" has been hacked. Somehow, someone got access to the "secure" page listing all the students email addresses. Or are we keeping that hush-hush?]

Centenary Art: Feild and Waggenspack, shows running for two weeks

Helen Feild and Emily Waggenspack (pictured) are putting up their senior art work. Emily's in motion, trying to put up as much as she can, meanwhile I dodge class. The shows are on display in the Turner Art Center, our right-brained hideaway on campus.

Helen's show will be in the Airstream, casually parked on Rutherford Street. The two shows opened today and will run through May 10th. The reception will be this Sunday, May 4th at 4:00pm.

The Art of Communication ("Divided"), Emily Waggenspack
Big Circle, little circle, Helen Feild

Emily's work is a multi-panel life-size comic illustrating her troubles overcoming a learning disability. Helen's, on the other hand, focuses on several pieces she's produced at Centenary (on circumference, both paintings and drawings).

Ben Folds: Back Stage Pass!

KSCL Shreveport 91.3FM will be giving away one backstage pass for the Ben Folds concert! Tomorrow, Thursday, April 3, at 4:15pm ANYONE in the Shreveport area can tune into "Super Wacky Fun Time with Keith" where Keith and I will hold a call-in trivia contest to give away the pass. All you have to do is call in when prompted and supply a correct answer for the trivia conundrum that Keith and I present to you. KSCL Update: Internal Musings

I wanted to push this information to the outside. For those keeping up, I spoke to the Student Government last Tuesday to give updates on the Station. In the first part I ran through what's happened since I took charge and what we're planning for the future. The simple answer to both these topics is pure growth. KSCL has grown so much. I'm very proud to be a part of KSCL, especially when KSCL's history is leading it into a very exciting future.

In "part deux" I transition into the spending of student fees for media and other organizations. I believe that KSCL deserves a larger "slice" of that pie. When around $115,000 comes in every semester from student fees, it only seems right to reward the growing organizations with more money; cutting money from the stagnant. The senate was very receptive and I am extremely hopeful for the future. There's more on the conglomerate's site. So, this is where we are now: a hopeful future, but a very poor summer.

Phase 3 is Schleuss writing for grants, kicking underwriting into gear, and finding someplace to live (hopefully on campus!). Stay tuned!

Raising Money for Ben Folds @ Centenary [Fundraiser]

Fighting Squirrels Productions is at it again raising money for their upcoming concert. While Ben Folds w/ Eef Barzelay isn't until April 4th, the group is covering costs, which at current word is about 5K. Everyone's invited to support Ben Folds at Centenary this Thursday, March 13th at 5pm inside Cici's Pizza on Youree Drive.

Student members of Fighting Squirrels will be waiting tables and serving customers. All the tips for the night will benefit the upcoming concert. For more information drop a line to Corey Shadd at cshadd@centenary.edu.

[Update] Rumor: Ben Folds Coming to Shreveport, Centenary

Okay, our rumor is being smashed from left and right. Thanks for all the information regarding this event. And please comment below if you have any information.

There are two pieces of information that still point to Ben Folds playing at Centenary. The first, as mentioned in a previous post, is a pamphlet sent out by Admissions with the text, "enjoy a concert featuring Ben Folds." The second bit of information is buried in our Facilities scheduling calendar. Comparing the original date of April 3rd and Folds' Myspace reveals a conflict. Folds is set to play in Tulsa, OK. Thanks to Melissa for that bit of info.

However, there is still an open date on Folds' MySpace. That date is also scheduled in our Facilities Calendar as "Concert". On our end, we still have no confirmation on any specific person playing at the event, nor do we notice any changes to www.centenarytickets.com. Keep your eyes open!
