Summer Broadcasting Begins With a Full Schedule and a Turkey Sandwich

I personally tuned in to her show on my new mp3 player and had nice listen, however as the Summer Program Director I'm responsible for listening to all the shows and evaluating each DJ's performance. So I'm working while I play I suppose. And, hey, don't get me wrong- I'm lovin' it that we have such a full schedule. We have back-to-back shows on Sunday from noon to 2am. That's totally awesome, but it also means I'm going to be listening to the radio for 14 hours strait today. Heh, heh....

You know what, it's cool. I have decided I can do anything. But I've always been an advocate of the age-old saying that you can do anything as long as you start with a Turkey Sandwich. So I'm making a turkey sandwich and I'm gonna eat it. And I'm gonna listen to the radio for 14 hours today. And I'm gonna get up and do it again tomorrow. Cause Jesus gave me a Turkey Sandwich with extra blessing.

If we survive finals..

So we behind the golden, diamond-encrusted gates at the KSCL office (CAB donated us their budget for the last two weeks of April) are counting the hours until semester exams are over and we're out breathing the sweet swampy summer air of freedom.

Coming up over the next few weeks will be the release of a lot of interviews on podcast and on air, including the ones with environmentalist Dr. Garrison and medical ethicist Dr. Hackler. Hopefully we'll also get internet streaming going as well.

But until then, I'll be chugging coffee like it's going out of style while trying to convince myself to review that one nuclear physics problem with the helium atom splitting from the lithium atom one more time instead of watching old Colbert clips.... Has anyone else seen him at the 2006 White House Correspondents dinner? Probably the most hilarious thing that will ever be recorded on C-SPAN--watch it here.

Rally for the scene!

No, yes, I'm not talking about the bloody scene, but about the SCENE. The music scene. Here in Shreveport. Sceneport if you will. On Saturday, July 21st the SPD shut down a live performance by the Noids. A member of the audience clashed with police and was taken away in a squad car, bruised and cuffed. While the music-goers that day do realize that they didn't have permission to perform at Stoner Skate park, they feel that the police response was hostile to their art.

In response, a group of fifty-plus met at Big D's BBQ to talk about what happened, and what to do now.
The main points from this gathering:

• we should have the right to assembly
• it's extremely difficult to get the proper permission to have live shows on public property (Stoner Park)
• other cities have instituted "Copwatch" to stop police brutality, maybe Shreveport should follow
• city council is hurting our group of music goers
• you don't want to get "labeled" as a terrorist by videotaping police
• "we have to be involved"
• go to city council meetings
• need a all-age friendly venue
  
• use contacts and connections
• "let's make Shreveport cool"

Golden Bear

The Jackrabbit Lounge hosted Austin's indie rock group Golden Bear friday night. The group was in the booth with DJs Tyler and Ben. Two tickets to the show and a CD were given away. Their next show is at Secret Headquarters in Denton, TX on July 21.

Summer=Here

Last night our KSCL veteran Chris Brown dedicated a song to me conveniently named "Here comes the summer," because I just haven't felt the hot concrete or smelt the chlorine.

However, it's hitting me show after show. The port city punx threw a jig with Jack Blasphemy, Hoodlum Circus, and Sunday Mass Murder. This show went down at the Body Electric Tatoo parlor on Sunday. One of the few all-age shows in this town. The show was awesome with some splashing from the mote that formed from the rain. Also, everyone went to Joe's afterward to see the crazy old man with mushrooms in his helmet and his vacuum. Then on Monday a lot of us went to Cooper Manor to see Tokyo's DMBQ. I saw a man playing a guitar with his teeth and another with flashlights stuck in his hair. Amazing! Anywho, here's some pictures thanks to Liz!
