Hip Hop Top 10! Same Place, Same Time, New Face...
Hi guys, it's your friendly neighborhood music director, Zakk. Tune in to KSCL Shreveport 91.3 FM and hear the hip hop top 10. Merwin is taking his driving test today and that's why I am doing the show today. The countdown is amazing! You will never guess who is number one! Could B.O.B. take gold again for the third consecutive week or did Sage Francis have enough in the tank to be number 1. Tune in to find out. Also, around 2:30, I will have a special guess. Cazes and I will be interviewing Matthew's Davidson Band, the winner of the Smash Burger contest for the top local band in Shreveport! These guys are super sweet, so tune in to not only hear the best hip hop in Shreveport, but check out one the top artists in Shreveport. Trust me, it's going to be fun!
PS: Check these guys out before the interview!

First Blog Post . . . Ever!
Alright kids! This is your Hip Hop Director, Merwin. So finally I'm actually posting something to the blog. Hopefully this isn't too boring for ya. I mean, this is my first blog. But anyways, I guess I'll talk about my show Audio Illusions and the music we played today.
First off, the Top 10 for week of 6/29! Some new artists to the countdown were Hopsin, a young artist who packs talent and irreverent edge, and Stevie Stone, a Midwest native with an uncanny sound like no other! The Top 5 included artists Resin Dogs, B.o.B, 4-IZE, and the funkadelic Declaime. But what could have been number one?
None other that the high-funktress, singer-songwriter Janelle Monae!
Her album "The ArchAndroid" is, as one person described it, an "epic James Bond film in outer space!" With blockbuster vocals, mysterious imagery, and notes of 60's pop and Jazz, how could anyone refuse to love this album? Ecpecially the track "Cold War".
Well anyway other music you missed out on, or remember if you tuned in, were Lazlo Supreme, Matisyahu with his awesome track "Smash Lies" and some throwbacks from Veer Union (had to put a little bit of rock in the mix) and MSTRKRFT (pronounced Master-craft).
Well that's I can think to talk about, but check back next time, and I'll some even more exciting news to tell ya about. And don't miss the show "Audio Illusions" Fridays @ 1-3pm, right before the Top 30 Show! You kNOOOOOW!

its fun to look at stuff
Its no small fact that I dig posters. While my room might not be quite as adorned with visual candy as some of our other staffers, I like to think that I have a somewhat alright collection. Anyway, I've really been digging the stuff I've stuff I've seen from Landland studios. They make ridiculously cool cd packaging, posters and just about whatever they think might be neat to print on. So if you're into cool looking things, check them out.
Top 30 Battle for This Week of 6/25/10
Hi folks, it's Zakk! Your friendly music director. I decided to go back to blog about the KSCL Top 30 and inform our listeners and readers about the coolest, newest music for you to know about! Now since our show is on Friday from 3 to 6pm, I don't want to ruin anything or any surprises we might have on the show. In order to keep the show a surprise, I will talk about the Top 5 artists in no particular order. Without further a due, here is the Top 5.
FOOLS FOR ROWAN with "TWISTED. TANGLED. TIED UP."
Fools For Rowan makes their way back on to the big Top 30. These guys were charting with us at the beginning of the 2010 year and in the past month, they did a re-release of their newest album with Tinderbox Promotions. Fools For Rowan has a sound of strong rock that you as a listener will appreciate. This five band from Nashville will not only be in the years to come, but they might go, well... Mainstream! Fools For Rowan definitely is the band to listen to and their music will make you want even more! Be on the look at because they might perform here in Shreveport.
THE BLACK KEYS with "BROTHERS"
The Black Keys have been riding on the countdown for the past 3 weeks and this week they find themselves banking in the Top 5. These guys are very popular with a lot of our listeners and they continue to grow in fan support here in Northern Louisiana. Recently on their website, the band posted a new video for the song Too Afraid To Love You. The video takes place live in the studio where they recorded the album. Also featured on their website is a tour schedule. If you happened to find yourself going to Oakland, CA or Portland, OR, then might a suggest the Black Keys as something to check out for you summer adventure.
TOBACCO with "MANIAC MEAT"
Where start with Tobacco.... Well this band is a spin off of Black Super Moth Rainbow. I feel like that is a good start. If you remember in 2008, that was when Tobacco release their first album Fucked Up Friends, then you must remember how awesome Tobacco was. "Street Trash" (Fucked Up Friends) was one of the most popular songs here at KSCL and still is. "Street Trash" is probably played at least 3 times a month if not more. It's that damn catchy, I swear. Anyways, where was I... Oh yes, Street Trash may have been a great song, but stand back. Tobacco team up with who? That's right, Beck! The coolest track to have at the parties now a days would have to be "Fresh Hex" (Maniac Meat) with Beck himself. Currently the song is one of the most played songs off Maniac Meat. So stand aside "Street Trash", there's a new track in town and it's "Fresh Hex"!
BETH THORNLEY with "WASH U CLEAN"
Beth Thornley finds herself this week cashing herself in the Top 5 again this week. Beth is an awesome performer and her music will make you want to move all over the place. This is Beth's fifth week on the Top 30 and she doesn't seem to be slowing down for that number one spot. Beth's most popular song at the station currently is the Wash U Clean song. This song is well-crafted and very enjoyable for the listening ear. The begins with a horn playing the main melody for the song and then not too much later adds in the percussion and singer. One of my personal favorite lines out of the song is in the chorus, "You got the match and I got the gasoline". Finally the artwork for the album rocks and the colors of orange, red and yellow make it the perfect summer album. Lookout!
DEPRECIATION GUILD with "SPIRIT YOUTH"
The Depreciation Guild jumps up high on the Top 30 this week moving up not only into the Top 10, but into the Top 5! These guys have been on the countdown for a total of 4 weeks. Currently, the Depreciation Guild release a single on their website called "Dream About Me". This track is offer is available on 7'' vinyl and that rocks. Depreciation Guild is a lot of fun and it is great to listen to the entire album. So if you are looking to chill out for the summer, check out the Depreciation Guild and cool off from the summer heat.
Who will win this week on the countdown? Will Beth Thornley heat up the competition and find herself at number one? Will Depreciation Guild freeze everyone with their cool tracks? Will Black Keys team-up brotherly with another artist? Will Tobacco use their crazy luck to achieve number? Or will Fools For Rowan tie up all the competition and steal that number one spot? Tune in Friday from 3-6pm to find out!

FROM THE INBOX OF A MUSIC DIRECTOR
Hey kids,
Wow...Would you look at that. Two posts and now a third? Wait, whats that...3 POSTS IN ONE DAY!!!??? This stuff be mad crazy yo.
Anywho, I was searching through my email inbox and came across this email that said this:
------------
KSCL people,
I play with Astrid Pierce, a four-piece Brooklyn, NY-based rock and roll band, drawing from influences such as My Bloody Valentine, Television, Joy Division, the Verve, and Nirvana.
By now, you should have received a copy of our most recent release, The Mainline Mile EP, via AAM. We'd love for you to have a listen and pass it on to any DJ that may be interested in adding Astrid Pierce to their playlist.
Also, if you're able, we'd like to welcome you to post "Shakin' on the 1 Train"
Thanks very much for your time and consideration! We look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Yours,
Craig Harff and Astrid Pierce
---------------
I took a listen to their EP and thought, "Yea, this is pretty good." So I said why the hell not?
"Astrid Pierce is an independent rock and roll band from Brooklyn, NY.
The band has inescapably catchy lyrics, resonant guitar style, haunting violin, primal drumbeats and punchy Beatle-bass. Combining to make a sound that channels Nirvana's unpolished plangent honesty, the Beatles' pop sensibility, The Edge’s guitar techniques and the Everly Brothers' vocal harmonies, all folded into an Oasis-like wall of sound." -Astrid Pierce Press
So yea. The little spiel above is pretty true.
Ok Ok. I get it. TL;DR (Too long, Didn't Read)

Jazzn'stuff
Hey kids,
I should probably introduce myself as well. You might know me as Kirk Reedstrom, your humble host from 10pm-12am Tuesday nights, guiding you through the sound-scape that is Jazz and what have you. After my own little hiatus known as mono, I am back and better than ever. So hold onto your seats, drive around or sit at your computer (how ever it is you listen to my show) I'm on the search for even more new and exciting Jazz and Blues to grace your ears.
So much stuff is going on right now in my small part of the KSCL world. We've got some Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey that's about to hit the airwaves soon. While I miss their old bassist, Reed Mathis (effects guru and bass virtuoso), their new lineup is sick. I'm not sure how I managed to miss this, but in case you did too, you can download JFJO's album Winterwood for free from their site. Idunno how many Phish fans we have out there, but I can't stop watching the tour promo videos they've been posting lately.
That's about all I've got to share with you people now, so until next time, I'm off like Fluffy McCloud.

An announcement from your newly appointed Program Director:
Hey, kids; bet you don't remember me, Austin Price, the man once responsible for seeing you through the terribly dangerous time period that spans 12 in the evening to 2 in the morning on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. After a too-long hiatus, I'm back now, doing things that might signify my movement up in the world: where once I was a lowly DJ, answering to the slave driver of a program director above me, I am now that very same slave master, here to push the lowly DJs beneath me around until they quit out of frustration with my iron rule (little do they know what our DJ contract says: this shit is for LIFE).
But I kid, I kid. I simply mean to tell you fine folks that from now on, I will be back on the radio, writing for this blog and generally being a much bigger presence around the station. So, for those of you aspiring to be DJs, just send those applications to austinaprice@gmail.com; same to you with any questions about this business, any information I might need, and even that information I don't know I need!
So thanks, everyone, and I hope to make this a rather fine senior year for myself and everyone around me. Let's hope you feel the same!
