This is Your Captain Speaking...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but the new board is up and running! You know what that means? Shows are back! No more silly automation 24/7. Some DJs have already started their shows up again, and with a round of training tomorrow, even more new and returning DJs will be having shows throughout the week. The schedule is already pretty packed (there are shows back-to-back on Sunday from 12pm to 12am!).

Today I dropped by the station while Cazes and Zakk were testing out their Top 30 show. The premise is pretty simple, they play one song from each of the Top 30 albums off the chart Zakk makes every week. Even though the music is great, the entertainment provided by these two guys is enough to make me want to tune in. You can catch their Top 30 countdown Wednesdays from 3pm to 6pm.

In case you weren't aware, I'm the station's new librarian. While I was at the station today, I began to grapple with my task of fitting more and more cds into our already gigantic library. Since we can't magically accrue more space to stick stuff in, my only option is to get rid of cds. But then the question becomes which cds to get rid of? Do we really need music that came out back in the 1990s? Or cds with horrible reviews? What about the ones with two or three tracks?

Recently Jon sent me a link to a blog about a station out in California that is digitizing its entire music library. This route is probably nothing but a pipe dream for us at KSCL, but it's definitely an option to consider in the future. I have a bunch of ideas that'll probably get brought up at the next staff meeting. It's my goal this summer to at least get a handle on the space issue. Having such a vast library that does go back in the years is awesome, but so is having more and more new music.

Oh the conundrum!

Porcelain Arms Interview [KSCL Exclusive]

Nadine Kaskas, our News Director, interviewed Shreveport band Porcelain Arms on January 9th. The interview was in promotion of their Feb 2nd show at Harlequin Alley.

Porcelain Arms includes Ryan Veuthey, Will Hughes, Brian Fuge, Donnie Baham, Josh Holmes, and Larry Wright.

Ben Folds Coming to Centenary Gold Dome, Shreveport [Confirmed]

It has just been confirmed that Ben Folds will be playing at Centenary on Friday, April 4th for Centenary's Annual Preview Weekend. Preview Weekend gives prospective students a chance to spend the night on campus and learn different things that make Centenary unique.

Thanks Allison, for the update. The Ben Folds Fan Club website lists the tour dates and tickets. Centenary's Gold Dome is listed for April 4th. Again, the ticket prices will most likely be $15 for everyone and $10 for Centenary students. Fighting Squirrels still hasn't released any official information, but if an
external site is hosting the info it'll only be a matter of time. To get tickets, check out centenarytickets.com. Nothing new is there, but expect it soon since this show will most likely sell out. Great job to the Fighting Squirrels for bringing in a good act. This will most likely help their bottom line.

I still think FSP should work with KSCL to save money on the artist/record co. connection. Oh well.

[Update] Rumor: Ben Folds Coming to Shreveport, Centenary

Okay, our rumor is being smashed from left and right. Thanks for all the information regarding this event. And please comment below if you have any information.

There are two pieces of information that still point to Ben Folds playing at Centenary. The first, as mentioned in a previous post, is a pamphlet sent out by Admissions with the text, "enjoy a concert featuring Ben Folds." The second bit of information is buried in our Facilities scheduling calendar. Comparing the original date of April 3rd and Folds' Myspace reveals a conflict. Folds is set to play in Tulsa, OK. Thanks to Melissa for that bit of info.

However, there is still an open date on Folds' MySpace. That date is also scheduled in our Facilities Calendar as "Concert". On our end, we still have no confirmation on any specific person playing at the event, nor do we notice any changes to www.centenarytickets.com. Keep your eyes open!

Actor's Café, All Age Venue Opens Doors [New Venue]

It makes me so happy to see amazing people do amazing things in Shreveport. This is my newest find.

Actor's Café is a new bar/restaurant/venue located at 1401 Fairfield Ave. From venue's MySpace, "Our goal is to provide a fun atmosphere where musicians, actors, artists, and the public can showcase their talents while enjoying tasty food and a full bar."

Jeffrey Nightbyrd, the owner lists several upcoming events:
Thursday is always Actors Showcase. See info below
Friday sparkling Alana Dyson plays and sings with Kern Courtney. 8pm.
Saturday Ladies Night and the Shreveport Belly Dancers will perform. Trudeau has more info.
Sunday Academy Awards Party, doors open at 5pm.
Monday Dan Garner of the Tipitina's Music Co-op brings his popular singer/songwriter jam to the café. This had quite a following at Java Junction (now Skinworks).
Tuesday is when signed Acclaim actors gather to do scenes for upcoming movie auditions in the back room.
Wednesday musicians gather for the Music Jam. All good musicians are welcome.

Attention Aspiring Actors

Every Thursday at the Actor's Café we will be holding an "Actors Showcase".

Come perform a scene or a monologue of your choosing for five minutes on stage without getting the "gong." At least one winner every night. Free beverages for contestants. Fun atmosphere. Over a period of 8 contests we will see who the best of the best is. Real movie casting directors will choose the final winners. The final winners will win an agency contract and photo shoot. So come give it your best shot this Thursday at the Actors Café! Do a scene with a friend or a monologue. Starts at 8pm (sign up early)

The Gunshy Coming to Shreveport via Jackrabbit

Matt Arbogast & Co. will be performing at the Jackrabbit Lounge (lil' joe's)  this Monday, February 25th. The show starts at 9:00pm. Mustangs and Madras will also perform. Since it's at Joe's it'll definitely be 21-and-up, unless that fake ID you own is super legit-looking.

Matt Arbogast, aka The Gunshy, performed in the KSCL lobby back in November. Now, he'll be right across the street with the rest of his band.

For those unfamiliar with the Gunshy, Arbogast's vocals are raspy and wild. It is truly beautiful. And you wouldn't be able to tell his singing voice by just talking to him on the street.

Jackrabbit's MySpace has some phenomenal upcoming shows. The Lonely H and Parts and Labor will be here in March. The manager of the Jackrabbit is new, too, so make sure you give him a hard time. Joe's (the diner end) is a staple to our area and has had some ruff times in the past months. Support them all you can!

I believe Mr. Christ Jay with the Robinson Film Center created a Facebook event. It's probably the only socially acceptable time to invite yourself to anything. I'd totally be there, but there's the I'm-not-21-yet. But you can tell me about it!

Colour Revolt Coming to Shreveport, Harlequin Alley

What makes the headliner so special?  Well, maybe it's because they're a cool indie rock band from Oxford, Mississippi. Oh yeah, with looks to kill. And about 22 thousand Myspace Friends to help out. Shreveport, get pumped.

The show, according to the Facebook Event, will be All Ages and cost $10 at the door. Doors open at 6p and the show will begin at 7p. Of course, alcohol will be available for those over the age of 21.

The show is a collaborative effort between Flentge Productions and Carbomb Productions. Mark Flentge, head of FP, states "this is going to probably be one of the biggest shows to hit our area in a long while."

Should be a great mix of local artists and other state-ly talents. Visit the Facebook Event for updates.

[Update] Rumor: Bloc Party and Ben Folds Coming to Shreveport, Centenary

I've spoken to the Fighting Squirrels people on campus and they (as of Tuesday's meeting) haven't reached a contract with the band(s). Essentially, they haven't fully booked an artist. Meanwhile, the actual transcript from the Preview Weekend pamphlets reads as follows:

"Preview Weekend April 4&5: an opportunity for admitted students to explore centenary.
Stay overnight and enjoy a concert featuring Ben Folds, block party, games and more! Be sure to save the date, more information is coming your way soon."

So, looks like Ben Folds is the main performer (still unconfirmed), while a physical block party will take place, on a -umm- block. This is slightly disheartening, but it's all still very unconfirmed. Expect updates soon. And visit centenarytickets.com for other updates.

Battle of the Bands is moving!

KSCL has changed the date for the 5th Annual Battle of the Bands to Saturday, March 29th at 1p.

We have done this for several reasons, namely: 1) it won’t be as cold, 2) we won’t overlap the event with other shows at night, and 3) it can be on the weekend. Our main concern is for our listeners and we want this to be the biggest event of the year. Please spread the word about the change!

Everything else stays the same. Same rules for entry. Same prizes. We will, however, extend the final day for submissions to Thursday, March 20th. Again, please spread the word about the changes.

Well, if you can (or think you can!), then the KSCL Battle of the Bands should be just what the doctor ordered. In conjunction with the Homecoming events KSCL 91.3 FM will be holding its 5th annual Battle of the Bands. The event will take place on Tuesday, February 19th in the Shell Amphitheatre beginning at 5:30p. KSCL is seeking eight bands/performers from any genre of music. These performers can be groups or solo acts.

Prizes are:
1st: $300
2nd: $150
3rd: $50

Word on podcasting

Hey everyone,

Maybe you've noticed, maybe you haven't. But we've been playing around with getting some of our shows (mostly talk) on the web. Right now we're going to experiment with hosting the files on our server and linking to it in blog articles. Then you'll be able to subscribe to our podcast here. Just copy the link and paste it into your podcast grabber. If you're viewing this page with a browser, you'll just notice that some articles have links to audio file (you can click on them for the media files). So, it should be a win/win operation. You'll still get to see a pretty blogger blog and we'll be able to podcast through it. You'll also be able to subscribe to the blogs too.

Rally for the scene!

No, yes, I'm not talking about the bloody scene, but about the SCENE. The music scene. Here in Shreveport. Sceneport if you will. On Saturday, July 21st the SPD shut down a live performance by the Noids. A member of the audience clashed with police and was taken away in a squad car, bruised and cuffed. While the music-goers that day do realize that they didn't have permission to perform at Stoner Skate park, they feel that the police response was hostile to their art.

In response, a group of fifty-plus met at Big D's BBQ to talk about what happened, and what to do now.
The main points from this gathering:

• we should have the right to assembly
• it's extremely difficult to get the proper permission to have live shows on public property (Stoner Park)
• other cities have instituted "Copwatch" to stop police brutality, maybe Shreveport should follow
• city council is hurting our group of music goers
• you don't want to get "labeled" as a terrorist by videotaping police
• "we have to be involved"
• go to city council meetings
• need a all-age friendly venue
  
• use contacts and connections
• "let's make Shreveport cool"

"That's what I like to hear," replied guitarist/rhythm-man Aaron. After great performances by local Jaguar Shark and ever-changing Ghost Town Flood, the Philly group The Teeth went on to quite a [returning] crowd. There were tons of people dancing halfway through the high-pitched, fast-paced performance. I think I lost control of my own feet somewhere in the middle of "I Love You." It was a really amazing show and everyone was covered in sweat from all the musical chaos.

A BIG THANKS to the Body Electric Tattoo parlor for sponsoring this show. There aren't many all-age shows in this town. We're really happy someone cares.

Summer=Here

Last night our KSCL veteran Chris Brown dedicated a song to me conveniently named "Here comes the summer," because I just haven't felt the hot concrete or smelt the chlorine.

However, it's hitting me show after show. The port city punx threw a jig with Jack Blasphemy, Hoodlum Circus, and Sunday Mass Murder. This show went down at the Body Electric Tatoo parlor on Sunday. One of the few all-age shows in this town. The show was awesome with some splashing from the mote that formed from the rain. Also, everyone went to Joe's afterward to see the crazy old man with mushrooms in his helmet and his vacuum. Then on Monday a lot of us went to Cooper Manor to see Tokyo's DMBQ. I saw a man playing a guitar with his teeth and another with flashlights stuck in his hair. Amazing! Anywho, here's some pictures thanks to Liz!

Office PAINT!!!

The last time the KSCL office was painted was in early nineties. It shows. There's lots of rust by our window, several flaking chunks, and lots of leftover tape and silly puddy. Maybe now we won't get sick. I'm working on getting our ceiling vent cleaned too. We might as well be breathing through a straw pointed towards the carpet. God knows that's clean.
