Rocking You, Less Like a Hurricane, More Like a Tornado

In case you weren't consciously aware of it, a tornado attacked Shreveport last night. Okay, maybe "attacked" is a strong word, but it cause power outages and a bit of widespread destruction (reaching from east Texas to Ruston and South Arkansas, not the same tornado, mind you). The storm knocked campus' power out, so the station was off air for some amount of time. Since I was at home, there was not a lot I could do, but Zakk (I do believe) got everything up and running when the power came back on.

Other than that bit of exciting (and almost harrowing) bit of news, KSCL and your station manager doesn't have much do report. Well, other than I am back on board for round/year two of managing/dictating! (I'm kidding on that last bit). After a two and a half hour Media Committee meeting, the current heads decided on the 2009-2010 heads! Congrats to Todd Johnson (Congo), John Wadsworth (Pandora), Michelle Junot (Yoncopin), Anna Media (Film Society) and myself!

Yes, I just congratulated myself. Why? Because after that two and a half hour meeting, three of the current media heads went to SGA to get our budgets approved. While they haven't been voted on yet, we still deserve a big ole' congrats!

And check it! Vanessa Boyd will be in town for an art show opening April 18th at 8:00 at Minicine! I'll do a more in depth post later, but keep your schedules clear!

Live from NYC #5: Ansel Matthews

Vanessa Boyd is back at it again. This time "Live from NYC" features Ansel Matthews at the Zinc Bar, two days after Christmas. Matthews is a singer and acoustic guitarist, who draws on inspiration from the likes of Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. His latest CD is called "Raised from the Dust."

KSCL will air Live from NYC #5 Sunday, January 25th at 11am, Wednesday, January 28th at 11am, and possibly Sunday and Wednesday of the following week at the same time (depends on if and when I remember to remove it from automation!)

Live from NYC #4: Beaten By Them

Alright, "Live from NYC" is back with a new episode! The lovely Vanessa Boyd has done it again, this time interviewing the band Beaten by Them at the Knitting Factory. The band has been promoting their new album "Signs of Life" across the US and Europe. With some members hailing from Australia, their sound is hard to steadfastly define, though a cello accents the improvised rock sound.

KSCL will air Live from NYC #4 Wednesday the 8th at 11am, Saturday the 11th at 8pm and Wednesday the 15th at 11am. Make sure to check out the schedule!

Live From NYC #3: 8BITches, radio play now

What, what?! We've got another Live From NYC from Vanessa Boyd in New York: this time with 8BITches. They're an awesome "chip-hop" band from North Haven, Maine. They use all kinds of crazy electronics to bring together their sound. The final product is very powerful.

To give you a taste, the band uses gameboys to get their groovy beats. Big Pic Zel then raps about blue screens of death and Zelda, to name a bit.

I think it's one of the best shows we've done. We'll air it on 91-3 this Friday, next Wednesday, and next Friday at 11am. Find it in the schedule.

Live from NYC #2: Bodies of Water [Airing this week]

Vanessa Boyd has created the second "Live from NYC", a new program featuring live music in New York, along with band interviews and audience reactions. This week's episode features Bodies of Water, out of Los Angeles, CA.

We'll be airing this episode this and next week on Monday and Friday at noon (CST).

Live from NYC: The Dead of Night (Nancy Brown), the White Papers, Barton Carroll @ Knitting Factory [Podcast]

I'm excited to bring this to you. Another podcast episode. This one here is a project that Vanessa Boyd and I are working on.

Backstory on Vanessa:
Vanessa graduated from Centenary College in 1999, working on a French degree. She was KSCL's co-Program Director and a DJ. Now, she's a musician and regular artist living in NYC.

She and I started with the idea of Shreveport/Louisiana bands heading to New York. Vanessa would interview them, record live show bits, and get audience reaction. Well, not many artists from Shreveport make it to New York everyday. So, it morphed into bands from our Top 100 of 2007. Well, then we hit some more problems with no bands touring and a hard time getting into shows, the interview, the recording, etc. You can imagine the legal issues here. But the promotion for the artist would be phenomenal. KSCL would promote these artists via blog, podcast, and broadcast.

So, that's what we're doing here. Vanessa traveled to the Knitting Factory on February 24th and created a show from that experience. She met The Dead of Night (Nancy Brown), the White Papers, and Barton Carroll. It'll also be in our podcast (see links on right). The episode clocks in at 8'37".

I'm so excited this has finally taken off. She attended a Bodies of Water show on Saturday, so that's a up-and-coming show there. Special thanks to Brandon Davis for arranging the band interviews.
