Elaine McArdle - Successful Writer, Rocker and Former KSCL DJ

During the week of October 7, 2008, Elain McArdle visited Centenary's campus to do a lecture series and to promote her new book The Migraine Brain. Ms. McArdle is an alumna of Centenary College of Louisiana and was a DJ for KSCL from 1977-79.

In an exclusive KSCL interview with Tyler Davis, Ms. McArdle told us about the fun she had being a DJ in the late 70's when the station was broadcasting at only 10 watts and the signal could hardly be tuned in across campus.

Elaine McArdle is an author and writer for the Boston Globe, though she boasts a law degree and has had much experience writing for other publications.

Literally!

Today was a good day for the staff here at KSCL. We had a meeting with Kathy Fell and Fred Landry to help us figure out ways to raise money and discuss the on going growth of the station. We decided to pump fundraising into overdrive. With the end of the fiscal year approaching, both Kathy and Fred hope we can garner some support from our alums through a phoneathon-type deal. So if you're a KSCL alum, don't be surprised if you get a phone call soon.

After the meeting, Tyler and I made a stab at cleaning around the station. We managed to move all the vinyl into the "Vinyl Frontier" closet and in doing so, I now have a whole new area to put cds! That means I won't have to get rid of as many cds as I had thought. Soon I can start reorganizing everything and the library will be truly awesome. The picture to the left is the closet that is filled to the brim with vinyl. Unfortunately, it's not in any sort of order, but that's least of my worries right now.

After digging around some more, Tyler and I nicknamed the closet, the "History Closet." As you can see, the old board is now living there, along with a case of 8-tracks and old 78s we found.

I believe the rest of the week will be devoted to figuring out the new logistics of the cd library and training to call all the alums. Summer Springboard starts next week and KSCL will have a table set up during the resource fair. Hooray for recruiting the first-years before they even officially start!

Now if it wasn't so blasted hot.

Boundary Lines: Mormonism with Dr. Richard Bushman

Dr. Richard Lyman Bushman visited Centenary's campus on 1-6 April 2008 hosted by the Attaway Fellows of Centenary, the Christian Leadership Center and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dr. Bushman (PhD., Harvard University) is a practicing Mormon and American Historian. He is an accomplished author of twelve books including Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling (2005) winner of the Evans Biography Award, and additionally he is the Governeur Morris Professor of History emeritus at Columbia University and most recently was appointed as Howard W. Hunter Visiting Professor of Mormon Studies at Claremont Graduate University.

He is considered to be "the single most widely known and highly regarded historian of Mormonism" according to Karen Torjesen of Claremont School of Religion...

And I had the opportunity not only to do an interview for Boundary Lines with Dr. Bushman , but to discuss issues of theology inside and outside of class with Dr. Bushman thanks to my professors.

I hope that the interview conducted for Boundary Lines will be educational and answer some questions that many of us have about Mormonism.

Local Artists Showcase at Turner Art Center

Local artists such as Paul and Susan Garner, Tyler Davis, and Gabby Reynolds among many others will be showcasing artwork at the Turner Art Center on Centenary's campus Saturday April, 5. The show, which begins at 6:00 PM, has been organized by the artists themselves and is solely for the purpose of displaying some really great, hard work. Everyone involved is eager for you to come and enjoy the show.

Coloring sheets and homemade crayons will be provided.

Turner Art Center is located at the corner of Kings hwy & Centenary blvd. It's a big pink/salmon/orange colored building.

Boundary Lines: New Talk Forum Aired On KSCL

Boundary Lines is a new talk-based show I've been working on for the past year. And when I say 'been working on for the past year,' I mean I've been trying to find time to do it for the past year and been developing the direction of the show in my head.

My first episode which aired March 13 and 20 focused on Judaism in the world and in Shreveport. So I interviewed Rabbi Dr. Jana De Benedetti who is leader of the B'nai Zion Congregation in Shreveport, LA. Rabbi Jana has an extensive career which can be reviewed at her website, though most recently she has taught Hebrew and Intro to Judaism classes at Centenary College.

Boundary Lines has begun as a show that will offer open exchange of ideas and opinions. The next few episodes will focus on Faith in Shreveport. To promote interfaith understanding and dialog is my goal. I currently am a student of religious studies at Centenary College and so I choose some of these topics based on the issues I personally come in contact with.
